Agenda

Virtual Workshop: Digital Payments in the Public Transport Sector in Kenya in times of COVID-19 and beyond

Date: Friday, October 16, 2020
Time: 11:00 AM- 13:00 PM (GMT+3)

Event Details: https://unhabitat.webex.com/unhabitat/onstage/g.php?MTID=eb61be812269b774ae970995a233b4e46

Objective: To bring government, transport operators and entrepreneurs together to discuss the potential for innovation, i.e. by introducing cashless or contactless payment options. This will not only reduce the risk of spreading COVID-19, but will also enhance the efficiency and transparency of the overall system.

The workshop aims to explore if the Kenyan transport sector is ready for such digital enhancement – and what would be the right partnerships needed to accelerate this.

Description
Kenya’s public transport sector is made of buses and matatus (minibuses), taxis and motorcycle taxis. A large majority of the population relies on these modes of mobility for getting around the city. COVID-19 provides an opportunity to reflect on the quality and efficiency of the industry and unveiled a potential for innovation, i.e. by introducing cashless  or contactless payment options. This would not only reduce the risk of spreading the disease, but could also enhance the efficiency and transparency of the overall system. Is the Kenyan transport sector ready for such digital disruption? Let’s discuss with the experts.
